Nataal, Raj Dhunna, All Purpose Studio, Leanne Rule: Tickets are now available for July’s Nicer Tuesdays!

Everyone’s favourite Tuesday night event is back, this time with a show stopping line-up ranging from a FIFA comic to this year’s Love Island promo.

The summer months are well and truly upon us, and what better way to spend the extra hours of light than with an evening hearing some brilliantly insightful talks from some of the biggest names in the industry? Well, there’s no better way, to be honest (besides heading home afterwards to watch the latest ep of Love Island). And for July’s edition, we’re once again heading back to London’s beloved Oval Space, where we will be hearing from four speakers who are ready to inspire, inform and, who knows, maybe even share some insider secrets along the way.

So, without further ado, let’s introduce you to our all-star lineup. Kicking off the night we have Nataal, the global media brand celebrating diverse storytelling; illustrator Raj Dhunna; London-based design studio All Purpose Studio; and animator of the Love Island promo Leanne Rule. If you’re into football themed comic books, learning how to design one of the coolest magazines, Love Island puns and everything in-between then this is the evening for you.

As this is an 18+ event, please bring ID with you to the venue. If you are in need of disability access, please make yourself known to a member of the Oval Space team on the evening or email hello@nicertuesdays.com so we can arrange assistance. Head below to read more about our incredible panel of speakers.

Getting an insight into one of the most impressive media brands and creative studios isn’t something you would usually get on your average Tuesday evening. Kicking off the night we have Nataal, a brand and studio dedicated to diverse storytelling around African fashion, visual arts, music and culture. Having recently started an exceptional online magazine of the same name, Nataal platforms some of the most unique and impressive creations and projects currently being produced. Throughout the talk, founder Marie Gomis-Trezise will be answering two big questions – “who we are” and “what we do” – while also diving a bit deeper into their practice. Marie will also delve into a recent project that has seen the studio collaborate with Lagos-based artist Lakin Ogunbanwo to create a short film Who Dey Shake, now showing at the V&A’s Africa Fashion exhibition. What a start, hey?

In recent years, football – the nation’s favourite sport – has become a breeding ground for creativity. One such brilliant example of this is Raj Dhunna who’s illustrated a comic Hamza: My Story, which documents Hamza Choudhury’s upbringing as a British Asian and journey to Premier League footballer. Commissioned by EA FIFA, the project was intended to inspire a new generation of footballers, and inspiring it certainly is. Realised in Raj’s instantly recognisable and sleek style, it also demonstrates one of the core aspects of his work: his brilliant ability to explore the idea of community, identity and belonging. Bringing us up to half time, we can't wait for Raj to tell us all about this comic at Nicer Tuesdays. It’s going to be an absolute corker.

It wouldn’t be a normal Nicer Tuesdays without a talk from one of the hottest design studio’s about. All Purpose is a design studio at the forefront of contemporary culture, having worked on projects for clients such as Adidas, DAZED, Boiler Room and the British Fashion Council among many others. In the talk, though, we’re going to be delving into their collaboration with LAW magazine, whose most recent tenth edition saw features on King Krule and a school band in Hackney. Renowned for its clean, simplistic look – which is distinguishable for its ability to let its audience do the interpreting – the studio designed both the physical magazine and its website. Publication design is an art mastered by few, so tune in to hear how it’s done properly.

Whether you’re an avid watcher or you've somehow managed to avoid Love Island fever, there is no denying that ITV’s infamous reality show has fast become one of the UK’s most anticipated cultural moments of the summer. With all of this in mind, animating the very first thing audiences will see – the series promo – probably comes with quite a lot of pressure. But Brighton-based illustrator Leanne Rule well and truly rose to the challenge, creating an advert alongside creative studio Kitchen and the ITV creative team that was full of everything that Love Island is about – character. Rounding up the night, she’ll share the whole process, the many different stages along the way and the final – and quite brilliant – blow-up concept. It sounds exactly like our type of talk on paper (sorry).
